All Because Two People Fell In Love

January 30, 2010

I finally finished the frames for this project I posted on my family blog, I think they turned great!

Materials you will need for this project:

*Frames: The amount depends on how many you need for your display you are creating.

{I purchased my frames at Michaels where I used a 50% off coupon from Roberts on each one (since Michaels honors Roberts weekly ad coupons and vice versa). The frames were unfinished wood with originally having mirrors in them which I plan on using for another project in our 1/2 bath. Bonus I love two for one projects! The regular price for these frames are $2.99 each, as mentioned I used a coupon on each frame making them $1.49 each for a total of $5.96 for all four.}

*Paint: Purchase paint that goes with your decor in the room you will be displaying them.

{I purchased my burnt orange, olive green, and mustard yellow acrylic paints at Michaels ( I had the red from a previous project). The past week they were running a special on a specific brand of their paint for 3/$1. Which is a great deal, each bottle ended up being $0.33.}

*Scrapbook Paper: The amount depends on how many frames you are using for your display.

{As mentioned in a different post: I usually stock up on paper at Hobby Lobby watch for when they run the single sheets for the small 5/$1, and the large $3/$1. This past week I did notice in the Michaels ad 5/$1 for all scrapbook paper priced regularly at $0.59!}

*Distressing Ink Pad in Walnut

{Another Hobby Lobby purchase, I used a 40% off coupon on this item (another weekly coupon from their ad) since full price was somewhere around $5.00, I ended up paying around $3.00 for mine. You can find this back by the stamp section.}

*Modge Podge Glue in Matte Finish

{I purchased this at Roberts where I used a 50% off any regular priced item coupon. This made the bottle discounted from $6.99 to $3.49, I opted for a larger bottle since I plan on using it in the future, so it was a bigger bang for my buck to buy the larger bottle.}

*Package of Sponge Brushes in Various Sizes

{I purchased these at the dollar store, the package I got included: small ,medium, and large sized brushes. This is a great deal since I needed more than one brush for this project and now I have more for future projects!}

*Sandpaper

{I had this around my house so didn't need to go out and purchase any but I do believe you can find it at Wal-Mart for around $1.99 for a multi-pack. Sandpaper is great to have it adds texture and antiques very well.}

*Scrap Fabric: This is for the pinwheels so its optional.

{I used some left over fabric I had from the mentioned project, so I didn't need to go out and buy any. I did purchase the fabric at Joann's Fabric, they were actually Fat Quarters which means they were measured specifically for quilt making. Which doesn't mean much ;), Joann's will discount there Fat Quarter selection in the ads depending on the week down to $0.99 which is great since I love their prints patterns!}

*Vinyl: This also is optional

{As mentioned in a different post: I go to Just a Thought in Bountiful, UT for my vinyl, the saying I used was on clearance and you received an additional 60% off all clearance which made the saying mere pennies! Also I received an ad in the mail that Just a Thought is doing this sale again so take advantage ladies!}

Directions:

1. Get set up to start painting your frames. Make sure to have newspaper and cardboard handy to prevent paint from getting all over ;)

2. Dispense paint onto paper plate or bowl, or whatever you have handy and dilute it with a splash of water (this will make the paint got on thinner and will let the natural grain of the wood shine through, if you don't like this look then skip it).

3. Mix paint and water together, paint frame and set aside to dry.

4. After paint has dried measure frame to know the dimensions to cut the paper.

5. After paper is cut to size apply a layer of Modge Podge glue to adhere the paper to the wood, and allow to dry.

6. After the glue has dried apply a layer of Modge Podge glue to the top of the paper to seal the paper to the wood, and let dry.

7. Use sand paper across the paper to create an aged look and so the staining ink can have something to grab onto.

8. Apply the distressing ink as liberally or minimally as you wish to create an overall look you are happy with.

9. Its time to decorate, I used flowers as my theme for the frames but feel free to even leave the frames just how they are or go in a different direction. To create the pinwheels tear strips of fabric varying in widths of .5'-1.5' and lengths of 21'-24'. Stretch the fabric length wise and anchor the fabric at one end (I usually just put under my foot) and begin to twist until the fabric becomes rope like. Then begin to roll the fabric into a circle gluing with hot glue as you go to secure.

10. If you decided to decorate your frame feel free to go to town in a way that is pleasing to your eye and taste (as you can see above I used vinyl, paper, and the fabric pinwheels).

11. Hang and enjoy!

Total Cost For My Frame Project: $14.00!

*NOTE: I didn't include what I paid for the fabric, the ink pad, sand paper, or hot glue since I already had those or they were used for previous projects. Also many items I did purchase such as the Modge Podge I will get multiple uses out of so my money will go farther!}

Hope you love this as much as I do! Let me know what you think!! Love love.
