Love Chest Makeover

August 24, 2010

Hey Friends!

I'm BACK in the saddle again!!

First let me say that I wasted my 100th post on that lame-o last post I made!

So so so so not cool, sorry about that!

Secondly: How has everyone been doing??

Well I hope!

We are now moving on to redecorating the Kitchen!
{Aren't you so totally amped?}

My color scheme for the kitchen came from this wonderfully amazing rug my dear mother got for me for my birthday!

Here she is:
{She is round full of pattern, color, and most importantly YELLOW! Love love love!}

Since I am obsessed with this rug, everything had to revolve around it!

The color scheme for my kitchen is:

Red
Blue
&
Yellow

Weird I know but it totally works for me for a kitchen. By using high gloss finishes with vintage and modern touches it totally jells!

So I have this old chest that was totally not working with the scheme, well and it was totally blarffy and outdated! I call it my "Love Chest" because it holds many of the cute little notes my husband would write me when we were dating, and many cards as well...ahhhhh romance! It was a gift given to me forev ago with lots of body washes and lotions in it.

Here is the before:
{EWWWWW! Doesn't this remind you of those teach you how to paint shows that are on public access Saturday afternoons? BLICK!}

Here is the after:

And a side by side:

Wanna know how it was done?

Well here is what you need!

~Crazy chest or box whatever container you want to makeover
~Primer
~Paint
~Paint Brush
~Paint-able Wallpaper (I found mine at Lowes)
~Rub-N-Buff for an antiquey look
~High Gloss Poly for sheen (This is optional feel free to just use a matte or nothing at all)

This is how you do it:
{Before beginning remove any or all hardware on your chest/box/whatev.}

1. Clean you chest/box/whatev so that your wallpaper can adhere to the surface properly.

2. Measure the area that you would like to cover with wallpaper and cut to size.

3. Follow instructions that come with your paint-able wallpaper roll, typically your emerge your pre-measured and cut wallpaper in water for 15 seconds and apply it to the area you want covered.
4. Now you want to cover you entire chest/box/whatev with primer this will make it so you don't have to do soooo many coats of paint. The wallpaper especially soaks up so much paint, this will for sure save you some time! Allow to dry.
5. After allowing primer to dry apply paint color of your choosing for as many coats as is pleasing. Allow to dry.

6. Again after allowing paint to dry apply a poly of your choosing whether that be: Glossy, Satin, or Matte. I chose Glossy because I love love love it, the sheen gives it a modern flare.

7. Re-attach hardware, I used some Rub-n-Buff in the color ebony (which I won in an awesome giveaway from Chelsea @ Room To Inspire!!) to antique the trim and make it pop.
{No this isn't what I used I didn't have a pic of it! But here is what Rub-n-Buff looks like you can find it at any craft supplier! It's totally awesome, love it!!}

8. All done!! Enjoy!!

So what do you guys think?? Love how this turned out, but...will I ever paint something red again? Maybeeeee not! It was sooooo much work, but it for sure paid off I think. A total labor of love!

Have any questions about this project or just in general let me know I am so so happy to help and love hearing from you guys!

Thanks for stopping by! Love,love.
