Guys I need some "Nice" make up help, (by "Nice" I mean, makeup bought at a department store or makeup store like Sephora). Because as I am sure you know I am super cheap and only by stuff that I either have a coupon for, or that is on sale at my local grocery store.
This is where I NEED you guys come in: I was given a gift certificate to a nice cosmetic store for my bday, and I have never used nice make up before...{HELP! I'm a total nice makeup virgin!}! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for me! Please, oh please, oh please?? (Was that desperate/pathetic enough or what)??

Here is what I use right now, but am totally open to all suggestions:
~Concealer
~Mineral Makeup Powder
~Bronzer
~Blush
~Mascara
~Eyeliner
~Lipgloss (Lipstick scares me)!

I seriously do not have a clue! Should I be using a primer? Or cheek tint? Eye shadow? (See what I mean! I'm clueless friends! So, so clueless)! I  would sure love any and all help! I just want to make sure that I get some awesome stuff, and since you guys are the best, I knew I had to ask for your opinions! Thanks so much in advance guys! Love, lovess friends.

ps: Entered yet?

  1. I LOVE your dress! I've been searching high and low for a maxi dress with short sleeves (and by "searching high and low" I mean "I wandered through the mall once and balked at the prices and went home") and I love yours! I guess I need to make a trip to Target ;-) Can't help you with the makeup--I'm a total cheapskate! I mostly buy the super-cheap-o NYC brand at Walmart as it is!

  3. oh i love love love that dress!!!!

ok....so my makeup... i used to use grocery story stuff and then i got hooked on bare minerals... i use the foundation powder... warmth (bronzer), the blush, and some eye shadows. i even use the bisque that covers blemishes and dark eyes... they have a primer you can use...i you use eye shadow a lot i would recommend the urban decay primer...that stuff is amazing...no creasing...
i use almay liguid eyeliner...and maybelline mascara... so everything else is bare minerals.. that stuff last forever so its not like you are throwing your money down the drain and the starter kit is a really good deal... one foundation thing thats like $25 lasts me MONTHS! its awesome...
anyways...thats just what i use... haha

you are gorgeous... i want that dress!

  6. Your makeup that you have on in those pictures looks GORGEOUS! You need no help :) But so fun that you have a gift card to a nice place! I wear mineral makeup and mineral blush too and I LOVE them and would never switch. Maybe try some new, fun eye shadows. Have someone help you there pick out some new colors. I love Bare Minerals lip glosses too. They're the fatty ones with a brush applicator. Have fun!

  7. I'm not a makeup pro, but I recently bought the Urban Decay Naked Eyeshadow Palette from Sephora. It sells out quickly, but if you sign up for an email notification when it's back in stock, it will be worth it. After getting it, I swore off drug store eyeshadows for good. For me, it was worth spending the $48 for 12 GOOD colors that don't fade and last all day.

  8. I love bare minerals its the only thing I love, I used to love clinique but ever since I made the switch my skin has never been better. But it isn't for everyone, you should have someone do your makeup for you at the makeup counters and they can help you with everything

  9. Get MAC!! I have worn it since I was 16 and have never found anything better, seriously! You can thank me later haha

  11. the problem is - once you go to really nice makeup you'll be too spoiled to go back! i am OBSESSED and can not go to anything else on! i have such an opinion on this!! you are in luck! :)

so here's my list of CAN'T live withouts:
foundation: mac studio fix fluid $26.5
powder: mac blot powder / pressed $23
    eyeliner: mac fluidline $15
lipgloss: covergirl wetslicks (not sticky!) $3.5
eye color: mac pigments (they last FOREVER) $19.5

yes, some of these might be expensive but as often as you go through makeup (which isn't very often for me) it really makes the difference so i think it's worth it!! and other things like eye primer, mascara, blush, bronzer, brow pencils, and eye shadow are important, i haven't notice enough difference in the "nice" stuff to splurge - go for the cheapie on those!!

and p.s. i don't like anything claiming to be "mineral". i think it looks like garbage - at least on me.

  12. Found you through EBEW, you're basically adorable. I love that dress too much! Definitely what I'll be looking for when I start searching for a maxi, again. The search for one to wear today did not go so well.

I don't have much experience or advice in make-up, but I do have a few favourites. I love Clinique concealer, I'm not sure what formula is it though. So good for covering up. And I use a gel stain for cheeks/lips. The one I have is from the Body Shop (Canadian store) but there's Benetint by Benefit that's just as good. Oh, and eyeliner. I really do love the ones at Sephora, I've had a few of the minis and they are so good. Stays through a whole day, as long as I'm not rubbing my eyes too much lol.

  13. Green is your color love. You are gorgeous!
About the make-up I can try to give you a few tips.
    1. Primer is good if you know you will not have time to re-fresh your make-up during the day or into the night.
    2. Chanel lipstick is good but if you are looking for a red try MAC.
    3. Nars blush in "Orgasm" is awesome and I think would look really good on your skin.
    4. Buying higher end products even once can get you hooked so be careful. If you think you might get hooked then maybe buy a new perfume.
Hope that helped, either way you look beautiful and good luck with that gift certificate.

    Cheers,
    Bre

  14. For the most part I'm a department store makeup buyer, I can't afford 20$ eyeshadows! But... on the occasion I like to treat myself at Sephora. Here are my picks:

For things like eyeliner, eyeshadow and the like I love Urban Decay! It's reeeally 'nice makeup'. The pigments are really true to what they look like, unlike some department store makeup that goes on more sheer then you may expect.

Urban Decay also has amazing eye shadow primer, which stops your makeup from budging an inch! I started using their primer when it was fairly new, but now it comes in colors as well which is great for when you don't want to wear eyeshadow.

Anyway,I would also highly highly suggest Benefit cheek and lip tint/stain, also Tarte natural beauty cheek stain is fantastic. I love a cheek stain over blush! It gives you a real glow as well as color that lasts all day! Definitely something to try!
Wow I sound like a commercial, anyway, have fun shopping!

  15. For blush, I love NARS in Orgasm (the name makes me laugh, but the color is awesome.) And yes! you need eyeshadow! It's like shoes for your face-you can change it up all the time. My favorite "nice" brand is Urban Decay. Their colors are awesome and stay put very well. For a nice every day shade, go with Sin-it's a pretty champagne color that goes with almost everything.

If I lived in Utah, I would totally take you makeup shopping! I could seriously live in Sephora :)

  16. oh girl I totally have your back. I'm all over it. So for mascara, benefit brand is definitely the best. An awesome bronzer and blush duo is NARS, laguna and orgasm duo (terrible name awesome blush). For eyeliner I am in love with stella's brown and black...ahh okay I have a serious problem with my love for makeup.

  19. Clinique has great stuff! I especially love their loose powder with the extra iridescent sparkles in it. It just makes you glow! I use their skin care line adn then mix some of their makeup with cheaper drugstore versions, and I've always loved the results.

  20. Love this dress on you! The green compliments your skin/hair tone SO well and the fit is very flattering.

  22. I swear by bare minerals. I love all their stuff and it's the only foundation I've ever had that actually matches my skin properly. They have way fun eye shadows, you can go crazy or tame. And they have kits of stuff that goes together so you don't have to guess. Pretty awesome!

PS that dress is super cute!

  23. the only blush you should ever use is found at the body shop...no lie! it's the shimmer waves blush palate and i haven't worn anything else for more than 5 years now. it goes on light yet leaves an illuminating look to your skin that's too die for. i also use it for eye shadow sometimes since it looks that great on your skin. it goes for about $23 but it's totally worth it----TRUST ME

  25. I had a makeup channel on YouTube for a while and used to watch a whole host of "gurus" every day. There are so many MAC fanatics out there, but most of their foundations don't impress me. My MAC faves are their Mineralize Skin Finishes (use as blush, bronzer or highlight, depending on the shade you buy), paint pots (use as eyeshadow base or and easy way to have a stick-all-day wash of color on your lid) and eyeshadow in Woodwinked (just swipe it on your finger and I bet you'll fall in love).
My fave lipgloss is by the incomparable Laura Mercier. Her Lip Glace is perfect.
Urban Decay pencil liners are hands down the best, in my (and many other people's) opinion if you like pencil liners. So soft and easy to apply and the colors are vibrant. Next in line is Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes.
My favorite blush of all time is Orange from Korres. I love Korres product for their ingredients. It's a company from greece commited to good for your skin products. You might try their bronzer too.
Everything but MAC can be found at Sephora.

  30. Those shoes look so cute with that maxi dress!! As for make-up here is what I have come to know through my trials with various kinds.

    1. An esthetician just told me that bare minerals can cause your pores to back up causing these weird bumps under your sink, so she suggested MAC mineral powder (if you want mineral)
    2. I used to only use MAC foundation (liquid or studio fix) but I moved and there was a Sephora nearby so I tried a few others. I tried Make Up Forever foundation and it was too cakey and turned shiny half way through the day. I tried Estee Lauder but the coverage didn't stay all day and I hate touching up make up at work. I also tried the Maybelline mineral from Target but it also didn't cover well. I am now back to MAC. The coverage lasts all day at work. I can use it lightly for the day and if I am going out at night I can apply more for a dramatic look without feeling like it's too much.

Oh, and lips I love Bobbi Brown and Stila.

Okay, enough from me. Good luck! New makeup is so much fun!!

  31. Love the dress! I am no help in the makeup department - you know much more than I (based solely on your perfect eyeliner that I cannot fathom)!

  32. I love your green maxi dress w/ your dark hair -- it looks great! Anyway, my make-up suggestions would be:
    1. Nars blush in Orgasm b/c it is a GREAT everyday blush. Definitely worthy of multiple recommendations.
    2. Smashbox Camera-ready concealer for anything from a blemish to under-eye circles. As a law student, it covers my "I've pulled an all-nighter and feel like sh*t" bags under my eyes like a charm!
    3. Best thing to spend money on: a QUALITY moisturizer. It's a toss up between Bobbi Brown hydrating face cream or Philosphy Hope in a Jar (heck, you know its good when it's on Ophrah's wish list!!)

  33. I love this dress! And the color is perfect for you.
I wish I could help with the makeup question but I'm a super cheapie too and mostly stick to the drug-store stuff. I do, however, indulge once in a blue moon in Benefit cosmetics. The Lemon-aid eye shadow base it awesome as is Benetint cheek stain.

  39. I love MAC. Seriously awesome. I used to buy only on sale grocery store makeup. Then I tried MAC and was hooked. Even though it is more expensive it is totally worth it. I know they say makeup has an expiration date...blah, blah. I don't think eyeshadow does. Lies I tell you, they are lies. I have had a few colors for over 2 years, that I wear almost everyday and I just barely saw the bottom of the tin showing through. They last forever. I am an eyeshadow, mascara and blush only kinda-girl. Occasionally some loose powder.
My suggestions on MAC eye shadows: yogurt, orb, fig.1, deep truth, hepcat, nehru, plumage...oh this list could go on forever.
One one must have item? MAC paint. In the pot. Love it.

  47. I usually live off of drugstore makeup because it's honestly better sometimes. Especially the mascara! But, since it's fun to splurge when you have a gift, I would go for a bronzer/ blush duo by Nars. I bought theirs a while back and I have been dying to buy it again.

    Have fun shopping!
